DIY rotating louvres: three options from mechanism to kit

You can build DIY rotating louvres in three ways. You can use SAM KIT with your own timber, make the frame and louvres from standard-length materials, or have a kit prepared to your exact dimensions. The main difference is how much cutting, measuring and preparation you want to do yourself.
Three options for DIY rotating louvres
1. SAM KIT for your own timber
This option makes sense if you have a workshop, suitable timber and experience in making frames. SAM KIT is fitted to both sides of the frame and supplied in pairs. One pair operates 5 louvres. If the frame has 20 louvres, you need 4 pairs.
The louvres are simply inserted into the system. They are not drilled or screwed, so the structure of the timber remains intact. The suitable thickness is 19–20 mm and the width is 99–100 mm. You can also use AB planed spruce boards measuring 20 × 99 mm. For the frame, we recommend glued BSH timber, which twists and cracks less than solid timber beams. SAM KIT can be shortened with a hacksaw as required.
2. Materials in standard lengths
If you do not want to source the individual components but can handle the cutting and preparation, you can choose materials in standard lengths. The range includes SAM KIT systems, timber and aluminium louvres, BSH beams measuring 80 × 80 mm and 80 × 40 mm, adjustable feet and a configurator. You can find them in the materials for a DIY build section.
The frames are not pre-drilled, and you must cut and prepare the individual components yourself. You will need a saw, cordless screwdriver and tape measure. Timber louvres are supplied unfinished, so they must be coated before installation. Aluminium louvres are powder-coated.
3. A kit prepared to your dimensions
With the third option, we prepare appearance-grade materials, cut them to the exact dimensions and pre-drill the frames. A complete SAM KIT and all fixings are included. At home, you apply the timber finish and assemble everything using a cordless screwdriver. Preparing the kit takes 2–4 weeks. You can find more details on the kit for a DIY build page.
Comparison of the three DIY louvre options
| Option | What you receive | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| SAM KIT only | Rotating mechanisms in pairs | Your own timber and a fully equipped workshop |
| Standard lengths | Systems, louvres, BSH beams and feet | A saw, cordless screwdriver and tape measure |
| Prepared kit | Cut materials, pre-drilled frames and fixings | A cordless screwdriver and paintbrush |
With all three options, you measure the space and install the frames yourself. Before sending the dimensions, see how to measure a space correctly for rotating louvres.
When to choose manufacture and installation
- A wide opening or access to the terrace: a sliding frame may be a suitable solution, with the track system designed for the space.
- A sloping or uneven surface: during the on-site measurement, the technician will propose how to divide the frames and select suitable fixings.
- An insulated façade: special fixings for external insulation are used, and the installation method is determined on site.
- A complete project: a technician measures the space, and our own team carries out the installation.
Manufacture without installation is also available. We prepare the frames and louvres, including the surface finish, and you arrange the installation yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Can I install SAM KIT without experience?
A capable DIY enthusiast can handle the installation. If you do not have a saw or do not want to make the frame from scratch, a kit with cut and pre-drilled components will be more practical.
Can I use my own boards?
Yes. The louvres should be 19–20 mm thick and 99–100 mm wide. For example, an AB planed spruce board measuring 20 × 99 mm is suitable. Apply the timber finish before installation.
How many pairs of SAM KIT do I need?
One pair operates 5 louvres. A frame with 20 louvres therefore needs 4 pairs. The configurator in the online shop will also calculate the required quantity based on your dimensions.
Summary
If you have your own workshop and timber, SAM KIT alone is enough. You cut and prepare materials supplied in standard lengths yourself. The kit with cut components and pre-drilled frames requires the least work: you only need to apply the timber finish and assemble the frames.
