How Much Does a Patio Pergola Cost?

How much a patio pergola costs depends mainly on its size, material, roof and installation method. A timber pergola costs least, while aluminium costs slightly more but needs no recoating. A bioclimatic pergola with tilting louvres and a motor is the premium option. You can find guide costs for a 3 × 2 m structure on our pages for timber, aluminium and bioclimatic pergolas.
Three types of pergola compared
| Feature | Timber | Aluminium | Bioclimatic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Structure | Glued BSH spruce beams, 12 × 12 cm posts | Aluminium posts measuring 136 × 136 mm or 140 × 110 mm | Aluminium and stainless steel, 130 × 130 mm posts |
| Roof | Multiwall or solid polycarbonate | 16 mm multiwall or 8 mm solid polycarbonate | Motor-controlled aluminium louvres tilting through 0–135° |
| Maintenance | Reapply the wood stain every 2–5 years | No recoating, simply rinse clean | Cleaning and removing leaves from the drains |
| Suitable for | A warm timber appearance and a lower budget | Wider spans and minimal maintenance | Controlling shade and ventilation throughout the day |
Timber and aluminium pergolas can be attached to the house or built as freestanding structures. We call a freestanding timber pergola a gazebo.
Pergola size and installation method
As the area increases, so does the number of posts and beams, as well as the roof area. A freestanding aluminium pergola can measure up to 9 × 5 m, while one attached to the house can measure up to 12 × 5 m. One SUN WINNER S500 bioclimatic pergola module can measure up to 5 × 8 m. At depths over 7 m, a central post is added, and larger areas are made up of several modules.
A pergola attached to the house is secured to the external wall at the rear. A freestanding pergola is supported solely by its own posts, without being fixed to the house. A freestanding bioclimatic pergola therefore costs more than one attached to the house.
Pergola roofing and colours
Timber and aluminium pergolas have polycarbonate roofing. For an aluminium pergola, you can choose 16 mm multiwall or 8 mm solid polycarbonate in white opal, clear or bronze. The standard colour for the aluminium structure is anthracite RAL 7016; other RAL shades carry an additional charge. A bioclimatic pergola comes in cream white or anthracite as standard. Other colours and wood-effect finishes carry an additional charge and extend the production time.
Pergola extras
Extras provide shade and privacy at the sides, as well as greater comfort in the evening. They can have a significant effect on the total, so it is worth considering them at the design stage:
- Adjustable side louvres with louvres tilting through 0–140°. We can prepare the pergola in advance and install the louvres later. Find out more in our article about pergola side shading.
- ZIP screen blinds with manual or motorised controls.
- Side panels in fixed or sliding versions.
- For a bioclimatic pergola LED lighting, infrared heaters, speakers integrated into the frame, rain, wind and snow sensors, and WIN GLASS sliding glazing. It is best to plan the glazing together with the pergola from the outset.
What to prepare before installation
The posts stand on 30 × 30 cm concrete footings at a depth of 50–70 cm. When installed against a house, the pergola is also anchored to the external wall. A bioclimatic pergola additionally requires an electricity supply and somewhere for water to drain. Surveyor setting-out is not required except in complex cases.
The guide costs on our website exclude VAT and installation. Installation will be included in the quote for your pergola.

Frequently asked questions
Does a timber pergola cost less than an aluminium pergola?
Yes. For the same size, a timber pergola costs less. An aluminium pergola does not need its finish renewed and can span wider areas.
Is installation included in the guide cost?
No. The figures on our pergola pages exclude VAT and installation. We provide installation in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, and it will be included in your quote.
Can side louvres be added to a pergola later?
Yes. We prepare the pergola in advance, then add only the rotating systems and louvres later. A single warranty covers the entire structure.
When is a bioclimatic pergola worthwhile?
When you want to adjust shade and ventilation throughout the day and stay dry beneath closed louvres. A motor controls the louvres, while sensors close them when it rains.
Summary
A timber pergola costs least, an aluminium pergola saves on maintenance, and a bioclimatic pergola offers the most comfort. Size, a freestanding structure and extras also affect the total. Send us a photo of your patio and its dimensions, and we will prepare a free, no-obligation quote.
