Do timber louvres crack and warp? What is normal and what is not

Cracking and warping are common concerns with timber louvres. Slight twisting and small cracks are normal for a natural material. In our experience, some projects still look the same after 5 years as they did when installed.
Why timber louvres warp
Every timber louvre is slightly different. Each has its own grain and reacts differently to sunlight and moisture. Some louvres remain straight, while others may twist slightly. We select high-quality, kiln-dried spruce in appearance grade, but the natural movement of an individual piece of timber cannot be completely controlled. On one project, for example, we replaced three twisted louvres.
During production, we therefore pay close attention to both the material and the installation method:
- We make the louvres from kiln-dried spruce in appearance grade.
- The frame is made from a glued-laminated BSH beam, which does not twist or crack in the same way as a solid timber beam.
- The louvres are not drilled or screwed. They are simply inserted into the SAM KIT system, so the timber structure remains intact.
- We protect the timber with an oil-based wood stain. It is renewed once every 2–5 years without sanding. Simply clean the surface and apply a fresh coat. You can find more detailed instructions in our article on timber louvre maintenance.
- We keep to suitable lengths. A timber Klasik louvre can be no longer than 1.5 m, while we recommend a maximum of 1 m for an interlocking louvre. For wider openings, we recommend aluminium louvres.
Timber louvre warping and cracking
Variations in grain, slight differences in colour beneath the wood stain, gentle twisting of individual louvres and small cracks are all normal characteristics of timber. The surface may become matt after several years, which indicates that the wood stain needs renewing.
When to choose aluminium louvres
We recommend aluminium louvres if you do not want to maintain a coating or if aluminium suits your property better. They are also suitable for wider openings and vertical shading. Aluminium does not corrode, only needs rinsing with water and its powder-coated finish retains its colour.
- A Klasik aluminium louvre can be up to 2 m long.
- An interlocking aluminium louvre can be up to 3 m long.
- We always use aluminium louvres for vertical designs.
- Klasik aluminium louvres are also available in wood-effect finishes.
A timber frame with aluminium louvres is another good combination. You retain the appearance of timber while only needing to treat the frame during maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
Is slight warping of a timber louvre a defect?
Slight warping can occur because timber is a natural material. If a louvre needs replacing, the SAM KIT system allows us to do so without dismantling the frame.
Does the frame need to be dismantled to replace a louvre?
No. The louvres are simply inserted into the SAM KIT system, so we can replace a damaged louvre at your property without dismantling the frame.
Does regular coating prevent warping?
The wood stain protects the timber surface and is renewed once every 2–5 years. For long louvres or vertical shading, we recommend aluminium.
Summary
Timber louvres have a natural grain, some may twist slightly and small cracks are normal in wood. Thanks to the SAM KIT system, we can replace a louvre without dismantling the frame. If you do not want to maintain a coating or aluminium suits your property better, we will recommend aluminium louvres.
